Diabetes is the result of too
little insulin a hormone secreted by the pancreas to
burn blood sugar, resistance to insulin, or both.
To know about diabetes, it is
important to first know the normal process of food
metabolism. When food is digested, sugar in the food
gets converted to glucose.
After food gets absorbed in
intestines, glucose enters the blood stream.
Glucose is the source of energy. The body burns the
glucose with the help of insulin secreted by an organ
pancreas. The role of the insulin is to move the
glucose to muscle, fat and liver cells where it is
burnt as a fuel.
Diabetic people have high blood
sugar. This is because the pancreas secrete not
enough insulin or their muscle, fat, and liver cells
do not respond to insulin or both.
There are three major types of
diabetes:
Type 1 diabetes: This is usually
found in childhood. The body produces little or no
insulin and the person need daily administration of
insulin for life.
Type 2 diabetes: This is the
most common type which usually starts in adulthood.
The pancreas starts producing less insulin to maintain
the sugar level in the blood. Many people with this do
not know they have it even though it is serious.
Gestational diabetes: It is
noticed during pregnancy which is high blood glucose
that is found at any time during pregnancy in a woman
is otherwise not diabetic.
